Steve began playing the trumpet in the Salvation Army at the age of 7 and also began composing at an early age. He won a scholarship to carry on his trumpet studies at the Royal College of Music whilst reading Theoretical Physics at Imperial College, London and followed this with a postgraduate year at the RCM.

Whilst at the RCM Stephen got to the penultimate round of BBC Young Composer competition and the world premiere of his Brass Quintet was performed at the Aldeburgh Festival. Since leaving college Steve has pursued a freelance career as both trumpet player and composer. He has written works for a variety of groups from solo instruments and small chamber pieces to his first Symphony, completed in 2005 and first played by the Fulham Symphony Orchestra. He also arranges works for various groups including the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), Brass10 (brass ten piece ensemble) and Arco (String Quartet) and arranges and writes for community and education projects.
